Working the plant
Title:  Working the plant
Description:  Rubbermaid was a big customer for NYSW, and they would spend some time switching loads and empties here. Rubbermaid received plastic pellets to make all the various products produced here.

Title:  Sunny face
Description:  C 430 3000 is just in from a day at the Marathon Maple Festival, still looking as clean as it did this morning. NYSW did its best to put on a good image for the various public events it participated in, running clean power and trains.

Every car counts
Title:  Every car counts
Description:  D&H 74 has a single car on the way up one of the branches, seen at Old State Road, just off NY 7 at the Binghamton city line. Note at far right the distant signal for the D&H crossing at BX, the signal and crossing now long out of service. This line itself will be eliminated in favor of a connection from the adjacent D&H in a couple of years. The D&H is just up the hill. The 10 foot clearance sign is for their overpass above Old State Rd.

Passenger work too
Title:  Passenger work too
Description:  The new B 40s were used on just about everything. Here 4032 is switching some passenger cars, positioning this obs on the rear for a trip to Jersey. Buildings are notable too. The tower to the right is the Lackawanna station, still in use, through for non rail purposes. The brick building to the left is the Erie freight house, unused except for an office in the head house where the local crew on WABH 11 is based. It will be demolished in the mid 90's, and a small more modern building erected, a brick structure in character with the building in this photo.

Old houses
Title:  Old houses
Description:  One of the things about upstate NY is the many old houses that are still inhabited, and which give upstate a flavor all its own. BH 1 crosses Port Watson St, in view of one of the many "classic" homes in town.

Past the LV connection
Title:  Past the LV connection
Description:  Years ago, the DLW, and later the EL, crossed the Lehigh Valley branch from Freeville up toward Truxton here in Cortland. The line was abandoned at Conrail startup, though there was a short segment with a lumber yard still served by rail. The NYSW still went there at this time. I am standing on the connecting track to the LV as we watch BH 1 go south. How about that MP box with the eagle and buzz saw herald??

Working the siding
Title:  Working the siding
Description:  NYSW would use the siding just south of Chenango Forks as a relay point for cars going up the Syracuse Branch, and sometimes for car storage. They often had a string of stored hoppers there. D&H 5017 has the honor of working BH 1 today, which is moving cars in and out of the siding. It has pulled up to the switch for the Syracuse Branch, which is in the foreground. Hes on the Utica Branch, which saw service almost daily at that time.

Working the D&H side
Title:  Working the D&H side
Description:  BH 1 was sometimes a maid of all yard work on the downtown side of the operation, working the NYSW yard and also Bevier St if it needed switching. Here we see it with 2012 and an SD 45 on the D&H side, next to the Jordan Spreader that sat there most of the summer.

Title:  Heading out with an Alco leader
Description:  The NYSW was still using a couple of Alcos in local service. The C430 fleet was down to two units, but C 420 2010 kept on. Here it is leading a pair of EMDs past the Binghamton Agway as it heads up the Utica Branch on BH 1.

Digging in
Title:  Digging in
Description:  BH 1 rolls north toward Phelps St on the NYSWs former DLW line as daylight fades. The grade is not as heavy as on the D&H a little farther up the hill, but it still gives trains a workout here, as the smoke from both units shows.

Cruddy light

Description:  Poor light was not unusual in the Southern Tier-it rained a lot here-and most of us shot photos in it anyway, since you often got some interesting consists, even if it was raining. Heres one of them, a BH 1 with a C420, GP 18, and GP 38, something you could find only on the NYSW. The train is northbound at Phelps St.

Binghamton yard
Title:  Binghamton yard
Description:  This view from Chenango St shows the layout of the yards in downtown Binghamton. At one time, this was all Erie, then EL. After CR sold the Syracuse and Utica lines to NYSW, they got the north side of the yard, at left where 2012 is working a cut of hoppers. Conrail uses the part closer to the ex EL main, at right. You can see the CR power for WABH 11 in their yard. The former D&H station, unoccupied at this time, will in another 16 years become the NYSW base of operations here. The Buffalo Runner runs alongside it.

Title:  Slow start
Description:  BH 1 slowly starts away from the Binghamton yard, passing the Agway mill(note the CR box cars there. Agway received grain in box cars into the mid 90's). Once it has its train onto the branch, it will start in earnest for the siding at Kattelville, where it will drop its train of hoppers.

Old road
Title:  Old road
Description:  BH 1 rolls north at Old State Rd in Port Dickinson. This was the last winter trains would use this line. By the fall, a new connection from the D&H would be in service here, as part of a project to eliminate two overpasses, and raise the remaining structure at Bevier St, resulting in the abandonment of the ex DLW line south of here to what was once the DLW YO yard. Northern Division trains would connect to D&H tracks here for the remaining trip to the south.

Title:  Short train
Description:  BH 1 has four cars for the Utica Branch today. It will swap with a job out of Utica, probably at Sherburne, and come back with more cars, working sidings on the way. There was actually a fair amount of traffic on the line at the time, though Sunday was not always busy.

Old freight house
Title:  Old freight house
Description:  It always struck me as odd that some stations and ancillary structures would survive, but others would not. CR tore down the large station at Forks, admittedly a large building is more of a liability and maintenance problem than a small station, but something like this little freight house at Oxford stays. Go figure. BH 1 graces the scene, a classic all by itself with one of the three GP 18s. The passenger station is at far right, now a business.

On the Utica Branch
Title:  On the Utica Branch
Description:  NYSW 3006 rolls north past the site of YO yard, a small yard on the north side of Binghamton that handled traffic on the Syracuse and Utica branches. It is now the site of a frack sand transfer, but for many years, it was just a weedgrown field with scattered rail and ties. Conrail switches the Agway plant at right. The boxcars are inbound grain, which was still a surprisingly common way of receiving it at this location.

New kid in town
Title:  New kid in town
Description:  NYSW had lost a couple of C 430s to wrecks in the previous few years, but still had two that were worth saving. The 3000 had been in service for several years, recently getting a new coat of paint. The other unit they kept was 3006, the John Treen, named for a long time conductor. Here it is at E Binghamton, getting a transfer out of the yard for the NYSW. Thats the old DLW yard tower at right. Like everything else, it was built of steel reinforced concrete, and designed for the ages. It was finally torn down around 2004 by CP.

Description:  NYSW 3000 passes BD on its way to Bevier St, where it will reverse and push these transfer cars into its own yard. The NYSW will largely return to its local role as CP takes over the day to day operation of the D&H, though NYSW will remain a partner on stack trains, and to some degree on other freight til CP gets on its feet in its new digs.

Title:  Still smoking
Description:  NYSW 3000 pushes its transfer cars from CP into its own yard at BX at the south end of Bevier St, doing what Alcos do. Conrail and D&H both have customers in this part of town. Cars on the right have been pushed through the Agway mill, and will be pulled, probably the next day. There is a hopper at the mill on the D&H side of the yard, visible to the left of the NYSW unit.

BH 1 on the Cortland side
Title:  BH 1 on the Cortland side
Description:  Getting a train on the Syracuse Branch during this era was something of a challenge. Conrail retained the line as far as Jamesvillem south of Syacuse, to serve a stone quarry, and was not willing to sell it to NYSW. As a result, the Suskie had only local business on it, which was served roughly twice a week. At the time, the Utica Branch was the more viable line, with almost daily service. So it was a catch to find a train running here. I got lucky this day, getting C 430 3000 rolling into Cortland.
