8 axle tank car seen
Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  An 8 axle tank car, sometimes referred to as a "Whale on Rails", is seen in Columbia AL on the Chattahoochee Bay RR. Information from the past few weeks indicates that many, if not all, of these cars are being retired and scrapped. This one is stenciled "Do Not Load. Moving to be Dismantled" which seems to verify this. There capacity in enormous, this one having a load limit of 382,800 pounds and able to carry over 38,000 gallons. For perspective, a large over the road truck used to deliver gasoline usually holds around 9000 gallons.

8 axle tank car seen
Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  This shot shows the capacity in gallons of this mammoth car. A typical tanker truck used to deliver gasoline holds around 9000 gallons meaning this one rail car holds more than 4 over the road tanker trucks. Amazing.

Handbrake area of an 8 axle tank car seen
Title:  Handbrake area of an 8 axle tank car seen
Description:  This shot shows the handbrake area of an 8 axle tank car seen recently in Columbia AL. Note the chain has a "splitter" that seems to allow the hand brake to be set on both sets of trucks under this end of the car.

Not very smart
Title:  Not very smart
Description:  This photographer set up just after a CSX freight passed. I assume he was getting some type of artsy shot of the rear of the train fading into the distance. Nice possibly but not very safe. Also, the area through here has been designated a quiet zone therefore trains do not sound their horns.

Old trestle
Title:  Old trestle
Description:  On a recent trip through Eufaula I took a little detour to see if there were any remnants of the old CofG line between Eufaula and Union Springs. I found this old trestle near the woodyard on U.S. 82. It's still hanging in there although its railroad days are long gone.

Old trestle
Title:  Old trestle
Description:  This old trestle was on the old CofG line between Eufaula and Union Springs. It last saw activity in the mid 1980's as a place to store old boxcars awaiting scraping. The trestle is still standing and mother nature is lending a hand in keeping it there. Note the extra "piling" (known to mother nature as a tree) that has grown up through the trestle.

Just a little to the left
Title:  Just a little to the left
Description:  Kind of like the old high school cheer..."lean lean lean lean to the left......". Apparent damage from a wayward vehicle is evident in Midland City AL (So name because it was the mid point between Thomasville and Montgomery via the railroad). Looks like the "urban youth" have expressed themselves on the accompanying equipment damage.

Dumber and dumberer
Title:  Dumber and dumberer
Description:  Now thats a pair....2 Smiths.....one former railroader and one current one. The one on the left in the Reese's hat is me....Bryan Smith. The one in the safety vest is GWI's finest, David Smith. He is happily awaiting 1 more year before he can retire. His expression says it all about his personality.....a real character.
