Heading Back To Northtown
Title:  Heading Back To Northtown
Description:  I just looked this BNSF unit up after I posted this since it wasn't in any of my guides. So BNSF 7730 is a newfangled ES44DC. Huh. She and NS 9-40CW 9545 are passing the Milwaukee 261's home at Minneapolis Junction after being turned there and are now going back to Northtown Yard.

Diesel Symphony In The Midway
Title:  Diesel Symphony In The Midway
Description:  BNSF C449W 4717 (in the BNSF initial Warbonnet), BNSF 9-40CW 984 (in Hertiage I paint), and MRL SD45-2 302 are on the point of a westbound freight. Catching 302 was a treat, since according to Trains Magazine last year MRL's 45's were going to be replaced by SD70s. Yet there she is, obviously returning to MRL rails via the BNSF. Lucky day!

Here Is Something For A Model Railroad
Title:  Here Is Something For A Model Railroad
Description:  Here is the Minnesota Commerical's boxcar that promotes the "Tracks Ahead" show. Bit grafitti-covered, but what a model railroad subject it would make! I caught it in the Dinkytown trench in the same cut of cars as the battered tank car in this album.

TC&W St. Paul Turn Passing Under Highway 280.
Title:  TC&W St. Paul Turn Passing Under Highway 280.
Description:  It is late on a fine Saturday morning on the last day in September of 2006, and the daily TC&W Saint Paul turn is packing some serious motive power! TC&W GP30C 4301 is leading a Red River Valley and Western GP15C, and a TCW GP20 and GP30C as the hogger nurses his train past St. Anthony junction and the Minnesota Commercial yard. Note UP's east Minneapolis Yard (which used to be bigger in C&NW days. Way bigger, as I fondly recall from my childhood in the 1980's) in the center distance.

Title:  UP GP38-2 1078 at East Minneapolis yard.
Description:  Here is a close-up of UP 1078. Finding places to get portraits of the UP yard power here is a bit of a challenge. I was lucky to find a place on public property at the east end, where this and the other shot taken here on the date at left was done. 1078 isn't C&NW, but she will do.

Westbound BNSF general freight passing under new Luce Line overpass
Title:  Westbound BNSF general freight passing under new Luce Line overpass
Description:  Here comes a pair of BNSF C449W's in Heritage II livery on the point of a westbound general freight. This is in the trench for the new Highway 12 bypass in Long Lake, MN. We are in the easternmost part of town, and the bridge in the background carries the Luce Line over the tracks and new highway here. The Luce is a former Chicago and North Western / Minneapolis and St. Louis line that is now largely a trail. There was an 1888 truss bridge here above the old GN that was carefully removed when the bypass project came through here and is now awaiting reinstallment a mile east of this location over old Highway 12.

Another View Of Northtown's Deadline
Title:  Another View Of Northtown's Deadline
Description:  I fondly recall the time a whole glut of "surge fleet" power was stored here. Alas, no such luck for these venerable warhorses. Mr. Dillworth, the creation of Mr. Diesel you put your own stamp on can live long lives...Only to ultimately go the way of the steam engines they usurped. Not even shiny new paint like on the lead unit can save them from that fate.

Northtown's Dead Lined Power
Title:  Northtown's Dead Lined Power
Description:  SW10's, SD9's, GP10's....All now put out to pasture. I remember the SW10's, SD9's, and GP10's from my teenage years fondly. Now they are fading ghosts who at last are no longer useuful to the BNSF. Note the two live SD70's in the background. They were changing tracks after backing down from the north.

A Long Last Look At A Bridge
Title:  A Long Last Look At A Bridge
Description:  When I was a teenager first discovering Northtown Yard back in the 1990's, I loved how the old Soo Line main crossed over the southern end of the yard on this bridge. In 1999 I got my only photos of a train crossing it. The WC transfer returning from Humbolt Yard. Now the bridge will be replaced at the end of March of '07. Farewell.

Description:  UP 9548 is leading GECX (former SP/UP) SD40T-2 8661 and UP SD70 4373 through University. This I am told is probably CP train 559 out of St. Paul's Belt Yard. Using UP power. Which explains why it headed onto the West Main at University Junction.

Description:  Here is an eastbound general freight rolling through Long Lake next to the new Highway 12 (which has yet to be finished). The GP38-2 in the lead sports the latest BNSF logo and image. The Dash Nine Forty Four CW behind it the old BNSF image trotted out in 1996. A Warbonnet is still a Warbonnet, however! Westbound BNSF Freight Passing Cedar Lake Junction
Title:  Westbound BNSF Freight Passing Cedar Lake Junction
Description:  Rumbling west with a general merchandise/TOFC intermodal job behind them (trailers began right in middle of train, well out of view in this shot) is BNSF Dash9-44CW 1108 and new ES44DC 7512. Meanwhile, bikers and hikers continue their own journey's on the Cedar Lake Trail. Oblivious to the cool show BNSF is putting on this lovely Saturday afternoon. The actual junction is just out of view to the right of this picture. The last remaining bit of Minneapolis and St. Louis track, now used by Twin Cities and Western to reach it's former Milwuakee Road line starting at Bass Lake in St. Louis Park, is in the foreground.

BNSF Eastbound On A Sunny Evening
Title:  BNSF Eastbound On A Sunny Evening
Description:  Rolling through Long Lake and past my residence on a lovely May evening is an eastbound general freight (a short one, too) with some hefty power lashed to the front. C449W's 5171 and 4082 plus an oldie: "BNSF"-ized Whiteface GP28P 1597. By the way, MNDOT said the sound wall was to block all view of the trains. Not true in this location, which is just fine by this railfan!

Old Milwaukee At Wayzata
Title:  Old Milwaukee At Wayzata
Description:  This former Milwaukee Road caboose was part of a Loram work train parked at Wayzata the Sunday I caught it. Nice to see that familiar bay window profile, even in the garb of a new owner.

ES44 On The Hind End
Title:  ES44 On The Hind End
Description:  The coal train in the previous "coming at" photo had this brand new ES44 on the hind end. The new BNSF logo does wonders for the Heritage II paint, seems to fit better with the vibrant pumpkin colors.
