C&NW 5019B rebuilt with Cummins diesel generator set for 440VAC auxiliary power for Chicago suburban service in August 1961. Sold to Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) on 31 December 1977, leased back to C&NW for operation. Assigned RTA road number 400 (not renumbered); renumbered to RTA 5019; retired in 1981; sold to Naporano Iron and Metal, May 1985. |

The first two cars (single level club cars, aka 'banker's cars') are privately owned by Commuter Associates, Inc. for their exclusive use. Club car service began on the C&NW's commuter lines on April 1, 1929 with a single heavyweight converted coach numbered 6700. As the coach wore out, it was replaced over time, but the replacements were assigned the number 6700. Eventually the service expanded and at its peak (around 1965) it consisted of four cars: 6700, 510, 553, and 555. The last three car numbers related to time; 510 was the historic departure time, 533 and 555 were the arrival times at Lake Forest and Lake Bluff respectively. As service declined, the service demanded less cars, but one remained in service as of the year 2009. Note also that the colors are changing on the equipment, and the club cars will eventually be repainted in RTA colors. |

I'm not sure why the C&NW was exhibiting this locomotive. Both EMD and GE exhibited their latest products, fresh off the assembly lines and polished up. There were also several railroad supply companies showing off their latest wares. The dynamic brake blister is plated over, signs of a shop modification. |

Built in January 1975 (c/n 75618-9) it became UP 2814 and later UPY 814. The C&NW acquired ten SD38-2's in January 1975 (road #'s 6850-6859, generally assigned to hump service at Proviso Yard near Chicago) out a production run of 83 units by EMD from 1972 to 1979. They were powered by an EMD 16-645E 16 cylinder normally-aspired (Roots blower) prime mover producing 2000 horsepower. It is seen here at the last manually contolled crossing in the City of Chicago. The first two tracks closest to my position belonged to the PRR/PC/CR railroads and the second two (including the rails under 6658) belonged to the B&OCT. The single track crossing those four is the former Chicago & Alton, later GM&O, by the date of this photo, the ICG. More information later as I find it out. Chicago & North Western Railway Alco C628 6705 at Green Bay, Wisconsin, September 5, 1976, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built as Norfolk and Western 1104 (c/n 3429-05) October 1965, leased to C&NW on February 1, 1973, purchased by the C&NW on June 29, 1973, retired December 8, 1980, used for parts. The N&W's C628's were delivered to run long hood forward (the F for Front is still stencilled on the long hood end of the frame), and were equipped with dual controls. This required a larger cab, and the overall length of the N&W versions was six inches longer than standard production C628's. These were the only high short hood examples of the C628. |
