Title:
3985 "Challenger"
Description:
The special Union Pacific steam train is seen departing West Chicago, Illinois, June 18, 2002 heading west. It is headed to Saint Paul, Minnesota to be displayed later. At this time the 4-6-6-4 “Challenger” steam locomotive, #3985, is the largest operating in the world. There are two sets of driving wheels and the frame is “articulated.” This way the wheels turn separately of the main frame to operate better where the track has tight turns. This engine was built in 1943. UP retired it from regular service in 1957. It was restored to operation once again in 1981 for use on special trips by UP. They converted it to run with oil instead of coal in 1990. UP ordered 105 “Challenger” locomotives between 1936 and 1943. They are about 122 feet long and weigh more than 1 million pounds. 3985 is the only one in operation of the two remaining. That is me (RLJ II) on the left videotaping at age 18. (Canon 35mm S.L.R. camera, Kodak Gold 800 print film)

"Golden Spike" steam engine replicas!!!!!
Description:
Two authentic 4-4-0 steam engine replicas are seen at the Golden Spike National Historical Site at Promontory Summit, Utah in August 2003. Here is where two railroads, Union Pacific and Central Pacific, met on May 10, 1869 forming the first USA “Transcontinental Railroad.” This allowed the railroads across the nation to be connected. The ceremonial last spike driven was made of gold. The steam engine on the left, #60, represents Central Pacific Railroad. Engine #119 represents Union Pacific Railroad. Both locomotives operate with live reenactments (Canon T-50 35mm camera, Kodak Gold 200 print film).

Union Pacific "Golden Spike" ceremony
Description:
Union Pacific has their "Golden Spike" ceremony in Odgen, Utah, May 9, 2019. "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 and "Living Legend" 4-8-4 # 844! UP ordered 25 "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941, last steamed in 1959. It eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019. 844 was UP's last steam locomotive purchased in 1944 and has never been retired and also was converted to run with oil.
