This Louisville & Nashville work equipment was parked in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi while the railroad was repairing the extensive damage from
HURRICANE CAMILLE
, which made landfall in this area on 17 August 1969. The green International pickup truck was assigned to the railroad’s 3-man floriculture gang, which was based here. This crew maintained the landscaping around the station here and at Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula and Mobile. A coast tradition since the 1920’s, their jobs were eliminated soon after this photo.(approximate date of photo)

Title:
S&A GP35 2715
Description:
Savannah & Atlanta 2715 was on a westbound transfer run at the Wisner Drive overpass in New Orleans. It was the last of 11 GP35’s bought by the Southern Railway with full S&A lettering in December 1964 and January 1965. The S&A had been owned by the Central of Georgia since 1951, so when the Southern obtained control of the CofG in 1963 it also got the S&A. These units were eventually relettered SOUTHERN with S&A sublettering on the cab, and this was later changed to CG. This loco was retired by the Norfolk Southern in October 1992 and donated to the Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah, where it has been restored as S&A 2715.

Around 1 P.M. on the day before Thanksgiving 1969, Louisville & Nashville E6A 772 was on train 9 – the southbound
PAN-AMERICAN
– on its way into New Orleans. No. 9 was operating over the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary on its way from L&N track to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Late in the day, and late in its career, Louisville & Nashville train No. 8, the northbound
PAN-AMERICAN
, was heading out of New Orleans behind E8A 787 and another E8A. At this location, the train was operating over the Southern Railway and passing through CITY PARK. The train was discontinued with the start-up of Amtrak on 1 May 1971. The 787 was originally Frisco 2007 WHIRLAWAY, was purchased by the L&N in October 1965, was retired in April 1972 and went on to become Amtrak 226. (approximate date of photo)

– was leaving New Orleans shortly before it was discontinued on 1 May 1971. The train was operating over the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary through City Park, on its way from the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal’s
EASTERN CONNECTION
at
EAST CITY JUNCTION
(milepost NOT-3.4) to the L&N connection at
L&N JUNCTION
(M.P. NOT-6.9). The operator at
EAST CITY JUNCTION TOWER
had put No. 8 on the “wrong” (i.e., southbound) track because an eastbound Southern Pacific transfer run had just passed him and was occupying the northbound track. The Southern identified these tracks as north- and southbound, even though they ran from west to east! (approximate date of photo)

Description:
Illinois Central E9A 2021 was on the service track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with E9B 2100. The locomotives had come in that morning on the
PANAMA LIMITED
and would head back north at 4:15PM. With the beginning of Amtrak on 1 May, this train was discontinued and left for the very last time exactly three weeks after this photo was taken. The 2021 had been built as IC E8 4029 in May 1952 and was upgraded into an E9 in February 1969. It would be sold to Amtrak as the 436 in February 1973, and it was the only IC E-unit purchased by Amtrak. It was retired in 1981, sold to Precision National Corp. in May 1982 and subsequently scrapped.

Passengers and onlookers were gathered around Southern Railway 2-8-0 722 at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Saturday 10 April 1971. The locomotive had arrived in New Orleans on 28 March for the city’s very first Southern steam excursions, which ran to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and back on 3 and 4 April. Here, the steam engine and some cars were about to depart on its ferry trip back to the Southern’s steam shop in Birmingham, although the train only ran as far as Meridian, Mississippi on this day. The Southern allowed passengers to ride on its ferry trips, when equipment was being moved from one location to another.

A lucky railfan was “shooting the rods” on Southern Railway 2-8-0 722 at Meridian, Mississippi. The locomotive and its train were on a ferry trip from New Orleans to Birmingham, and they were going to spend the night in Meridian. Lubricating the rods was a regular task at most stops during the Southern’s steam program, and members of the sponsoring organizations were sometimes called upon to help out with this task. Obviously, I wasn't dressed for the occasion!

The writing on this cake pretty much explained it all, WELCOME TO THE FIRST AMTRAK TRAIN OUT OF NEW ORLEANS. This was at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal for the departure of the

at 7 A.M. and the cake was provided by the New Orleans Railway Museum, Inc. (NORMI), a predecessor of the New Orleans Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.

Description:
On 11 July 1971 Amtrak’s SUNSET LIMITED left Los Angeles for the first time behind former Union Pacific E-units, but somewhere out in the desert the locos overheated so the train arrived in New Orleans behind a trio of Southern Pacific engines: SP U25B 6736, SP GP35 6547, SP FP7 6454. He is a view of the 6736 in the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal diesel shop, with some railfans inspecting the cab. Southern Railway E8A’s 6908 and 2935 were on the left and NOUPT SW8 number 1 was on the right. The next SUNSET arrived in New Orleans two days later with UP E8A 929, UP E8B 927B, UP E9B 958B, and SP F7B 8109.

At 1PM on New Year's Eve 1971 the westbound SUNSET LIMITED was pulling out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal as four railfans watched. The train had four locomotives and 15 cars: SP FP7 6455, SP F7B 8290, UP E9B 912B, UP E8A 929; baggage-dormitory car SP 3102, 10-6 sleepers ATSF Pine Ring and Pine Lodge, SP 9015, SOU Dan River and SP 9021, diner-lounge SP 10411, coaches ATSF 2869, 2823 and 2820, automat SP 10609, and coaches ATSF 2819, 2836, 2822 and 2832.

American Freedom Train
Description:
This aerial photo of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal was taken from the
PLAZA TOWER
building across Loyola Avenue while the
AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN
was on display 3-9 May 1976. At this time NOUPT still looked much as it did it opened in 1954, although one major change was the addition of the
PONTCHARTRAIN EXPRESSWAY
across the upper portion of the image. Below the
EXPRESSWAY
, from left to right were Tracks 12 through 2, with the AFT on display on Track 11 and the 4449 and its tool car on Track 8. The tool car can be seen but the 4449 was hidden by the platform shed. Track 1 had been removed many years earlier to provide vehicle parking. The triangular structure in the left foreground is the service and baggage building and the building in the right foreground is the main post office. Just a few years earlier there was a roof covering six tracks in the empty area where mail was handled. The building on the right with the staggered platforms had been the express building. Illinois Central Gulf piggyback train No. 55 was nearing the end of its trip from the Windy City to the Crescent City as it headed through
SOUTHPORT JUNCTION
in the New Orleans area. GP30 2278 had been built as Gulf, Mobile & Ohio 529 in September 1963. The ICG sold it to the Paducah & Louisville in August 1986 and VMV rebuilt it into CSX slug 2263 in August 1989.

, the building in the background, where it gave a whistle salute. After that, the train pulled forward, as seen here, and then it backed onto the track in the foreground, where it was placed on display. The 4014 was on its 2021 tour of the UP.

Former Southern Railway sleeping car 2470
GLACIER
was at its home for many decades, the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust.
GLACIER
is a Plan 3410 12-section/1-drawing-room car which had been placed in service by Pullman on 13 May 1924, was air conditioned on 16 March 1936, transferred to the Southern on 31 December 1948 and withdrawn from Pullman lease on 8 March 1965. The car had at least one subsequent owner before moving to the New Orleans area. It was painted dark green for most of its life, but it wore Tennessee Central red from February 1947 until April 1951.
