Old trestle |
Description: |
Here is a pic of the old Central of Georgia Railroad trestle over the Chattahoochee River near Columbia AL. The center span of this trestle would turn to allow river boat traffic to pass. Trains operating over this trestle were weight restricted and locomotives had to have spacer cars as the weight of locomotives coupled together was deemed as more than the bridge could stand. Here are a couple of pics of trains that operated over this trestle using spacer cars: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1999782 and http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1010597 This trestle was replaced in the early 1970's due to the coming of the nuclear plant near Columbia and the extremely heavy loads that would need to be moved to it. |

Dothan district local |
Description: |
The Dothan district local is seen at Albany GA enroute to Dothan AL with a coach being used as a spacer car due to weight restrictions over the Chattahoochee River which prohibited locomotives being operated over it couple together. The date is approximate but it should have been in the mid to late 1960's since the locomotives are in the Southern "tuxedo" scheme. Southern acquired the Central of Georgia in 1963 and began painting the CofG's locomotives in the Southern "tuxedo" style while lettering them for the CofG. In the late 1960's the paper mill in Cedar Springs underwent an expansion and the increased business resulted in trios of EMD's being used on the Dothan district. The spacer coach was also replaced at this time by spacer boxcars. For a view of the Dothan district local using EMD's and boxcars as spacers see: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1010597 |

CofG local from Albany GA to Dothan AL |
Description: |
The Southern takeover of the CofG is evident in this 1969 look at the Dothan district local using tuxedo scheme power lettered for the Central of Georgia. This is the route that used spacer cars, seen here, due to weight restrictions over the Chattahoochee River trestle which is only 2 miles west of the location where this photo was taken. The coming of the Farley Nuclear plant near Columbia and the heavy loads destined to it would make a new trestle necessary and in a few years after this picture was taken it would be in place and would end the need for the spacer cars. |

Road and yard power at |
Description: |
This photo was taken on a Sunday since the yard power and road power are seen at the same time. Track work was being done at this time and the yard power was running a Hilton turn at night so as to allow track forces to work uninterrupted all day. On Sundays they reverted back to the old schedule and the job from Albany came all the way to Dothan. |

Ray Browning stepping off caboose |
Description: |
Conductor Ray Browning is seen stepping from the caboose on Dothan district local #167. Mr. Browning was without a doubt one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He took up a lot of time with a budding railfan (myself) and never tired of my endless questions.....at least he never seemed to. A few years after this photo was taken I went to work with Southern as a clerk/operator. After the many years of him seeing me trackside at Hilton, I think it was a bit of a shock for both of us the first time I handed him a set of train orders I had just copied for his train. Mr. Browning was known as "Daddy-O" to many. He passed away in the mid 1980's due to complications related to diabetes. Classy man....they just don't make'em like him any more. |

Looking south |
Description: |
We are looking south (west according to the old CofG) along the Southern (ex CofG) mainlines at Ft Valley. The three tracks seen are, from the left, the pass, the eastbound mainline, and the westbound mainline furthest to the right. Seen on the right, blocking the view of the legs of the water tank, is the old passenger station. Next is the old interlocking tower that controlled the junction of the 4 CofG lines that came together at Ft Valley. On the left in the background is the old freight station that was still in service at the time of this pic. Note the train order boards. |
