CTA Shhhicago S-1 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority S-1 at the Des Plaines station (now the Blue Line) in Forest Park , Illinois on May 23, 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I was the rear car of a fan trip (note photographers on the platform in the background) featuring S-1 Shhhicago, S-368, S-369, 4409 and 4410. Number S-1 was former 4358, converted to MOW service in May 1972. Abrasive stones were held in steel carriers supported by guides located between the wheels of one truck. Two air cylinders lowered the guide and maintained pressure to achieve contact while grinding. The grinding stones could be replaced manually from inside the car through an access hole cut into the floor of the car, covered by plexiglass. The S-1 was a control trailer, though rarely operated at the rear of the train. It was rebuilt again in 1976 to operated with 6000 series cab-signaled equipment. |

CTA 3 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority 3 at Skokie, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Car 3 was built by the Saint Louis Car Company in 1950 using components salvaged from PCC cars. This was the northern terminal of the Skokie Swift and car 3 is seen changing ends, thus both pans are up. Four cars were chosen for the initial operation of the line (1-4) and car 4 received the pans first, custom built at the CTA's Skokie Shops. Tests revealed that the pans would not maintain contact with the overhead wire at speed, so airfoils, designed by George Krambles, were built at the shops, installed on car 2, tested and adjusted, factoring in prior tests done on the Illinois Terminal. The actual design was basically two standard trolley poles with their spring bases mounted parallel and joined by a light frame supporting a pantograph bow. A roof-mounted motor-driven retriever handles the trolley rope and a solenoid latch holds the pan down when desired. The tendency of wind pressure to push the pan down at speeds in excess of 35 mph is offset by the lift produced by the airfoil installed between the poles below the bow. While a pantograph concievably could have done the job, at the time the existing pantographs available either in the USA or abroad did not meet the extreme conditions of 22 foot high wire, low car roof, and weight limit permissible on the light roofs of the cars. Stools under small, light pantographs would not have met clearance limitations at shop doors and overpasses. |

Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority 30 departing at Skokie, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from http://www.chicago-l.org/operations/lines/yellow.html : In early 2007, another remnant of the North Shore Line was removed from the Yellow Line. Over the weekend of February 17-18, 2007, Dempster Tower was demolished. The interlocking tower, which stood approximately 300 feet south of the Skokie station platforms, once controlled the junction between the Skokie Valley main line tracks and the spur to the stub platform behind the old Dempster station where Chicago Rapid Transit Niles Center branch "L" trains terminated. The tower was last used in revenue service in March 1948, when the CTA suspended "L" service on the Niles Center branch and the stub platform was no longer used. The masonry tower, whose design complimented the historic Dempster station, stood dormant for the six decades thereafter. |

Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority S-417 and S-418 at Forest Park, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Chicago experienced a significant snow storm during January 1979 and the CTA had no snow fighting equipment. This was the response and it's unlikely this equipment ever saw any snow fighting work after the conversion. The rails this equipment was parked on were built for the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad's access to the CTA's Forest Park terminal, but the CA&E was abandon before that plan was implemented. |

Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority S-606 at Dempster Street in Skokie, Illinois on October 25, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The car was built in 1923 for the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad as line car 606 by the Cincinnati Car Company. The CTA purchased the car in 1963 upon the cessation of North Shore Line service and rebuilt it. Yes, that is a step-ladder on the roof of the line car. |

CTA 2024 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority Pullman 2024 crossing the Chicago River at Lake Street on October 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge pictured was built in 1916 by Ketler-Elliott Company of Chicago, Illinois, engineering and design by the City of Chicago. It replaced a swing bridge which was kept in service while the bascule bridge (pictured) was built around it. The first documented bridge at Lake Street was built of wood in 1849. This bridge was rebuilt by N. Chapin in 1859, rebuilt by Fox and Howard as a wood/iron combination bridge. In 1885, an iron bridge was built by the Detroit Bridge Company. The 1885-bult bridge was converted into a double-deck bridge in 1893. More information at this address: http://historicbridges.org/bridges/browser/?bridgebrowser=truss/lake/ |

CTA 2108 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority 2108 near Randolph and Wabash in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The prominent building on the right was known as the Jeweler's Building, also known as 35 East Wacker Drive. It was originally designed and built in the 1920's as a high tech office tower for jewelers. The lower 23 floors were serviced by automobile elevators that, for security reasons, transported the tenant, their jewels, and their car directly up to the office floor. Changing times reduced the utility of this machinery and the elevator shafts were subsequently filled in. At the time of its construction, 35 East Wacker Drive was the tallest building west of New York City. It is easily distinguished on the Chicago skyline by its "wedding cake" shape and the water towers visible at the four corners of the first set back (part of the original fire suppression system - now decommissioned). The top of the Building is a large dome which was originally a restaurant (currently the showroom of architect Helmut Jahn) and it is said to have been frequented by Al Capone during Prohibition. The Building is designated a Chicago landmark. |

CTA 2129 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority 2129 at Pulaski Road in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train was a CERA fan trip, seen on the ramp from the elevated to ground level. Once on the ground, the track made a 180 degree turn and headed back under the elevated track. There was a shop building on the other side of Lake Street. To reach the shops, the train would coast across Lake Street and into the shops as there was no third rail or trolley wire to power the train across the street. If the train didn't make it across, the CTA had 'stingers', wooden poles with a contact on one end of each pole and a cable between the poles. One pole would be touched to a power source (3rd rail) and the other pole would be touched to the third rail pickup shoe, effectively, jumper cables. |

CTA 2130 |
Description: |
Chicago Transit Authority 2130 at Western Avenue on the Milwaukee Route (now called the Blue Line) in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a fan trip sponsored by the Central Electric Railfans' Association using a pair of the newly-delivered Pullman cars. The trip operated between regular trains, so the plan was to get close to the train in front, stop at the station and let us off. To get this shot you walked (quickly) off the platform at the right, down and around to the platform on the other side, got your shot and headed back to the train so as not to delay the train following, maybe 15-30 minutes.. |
