PRR 9623, AF-16, 1963 |
Description: |
FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1963. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9623 and an "AF" Class B-unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9623 was constructed in November of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967 after just 16 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a mixed-cargo freight train that is heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible on the left are some of the PRR's Altoona Passenger Car Shops that border Chestnut Avenue for more than a mile! |
