They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train past the 1870's-era Passenger Trainshed on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzjn and points West. ELDO Action. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trackage in the Eldorado section hf Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1966. Shown here is the railroad crossing at 58th Street in Eldorado. Visible in the distance are a switch, a shanty, another position-light signal, as well as a PRR train waiting for permission to proceed. These are the tracks connecting Altoona (to the front) and Hollidaysburg (to the rear). From 1850 to 1854, while the Horseshoe Curve was under construction, this was actually part of the PRR's main line between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Description:
Here is page 11 of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 42. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "PC (ex-PRR) snappers U-25c #6511 and SD-35 #6032 earning their keep on a westbound freight ascending Horseshoe Curve on March 2, 1969." Both "snappers" were built in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. Penn Central engine #6511 was built by General Electric, but #6032 was built by GM-EMD. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Here, a mixed lashup of six diesels descends while one of the Pennsy's 'patented' mail and express trains (with a few coaches thrown in at the end) climbs westbound with EMD passenger units in charge. June 1966." The last of the six eastbound diesels is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9829, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Both photos by Ken Murry.

Mid-Mountain. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 20 June 1964. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #7077 and #9830. Both were built by EMD. #7077 is an EFS-17M built in 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #9830 is an EF-15A built in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are rockin' 'n' rollin' up the Allegheny Mountains with N-5 caboose #477526.

Here is page three of a five-page article entitled "Make That Engine Move: PRR Campaign To Improve Use Of Power." It was published originally in the July-August 1957 issue of "Pennsy" magazine, page 3. Bottom Right Photo Caption: "Assistant Foreman M.J. Morrow removes the blue flag to indicate locomotive is ready." Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9876, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in September of 1952, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 15 years of revenue service.

Oil Power. Here is a photo that was published originally in the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's 118th Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 December 1964, page 15. Shown here is PRR engine #9876, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in September of 1952, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 15 years of revenue service. This photo reminds me of the lyrics from a Bobby Darin tune: "Splish splash, I was taking a bath; Long about a Saturday night!" The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9876 and four more GM-EMD products whose numbers are not recorded: one "EF" Class A-unit and three "EFS" Class road switchers. #9876 is an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in September of 1952, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 15 years of service.
