SPS 4-6-6-4 #905 - Spokane, Portland & Seattle |
Description: |
Looking like a massive and forgotten giant in the scrap line is Spokane, Portland & Seattle Challenger type steam #905. Built by Alco-Schenectady in May of 1937 (serial #68995), it had massive tractive effort that helped both of the co-owners, Great Northern & Northern Pacific. After nearly 23 years of service, it was pulled from service and eventually sold for scrap in May of 1960. What a pile of scrap it would have made! Specs - Class Z-6.oil burner, 69" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, double sets of 23x32" cylinders, engine weight of 621,000 lb, impressive tractive force of 104,270 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
The Union Pacific designed 4-6-6-4 Challenger was embraced by the Delaware & Hudson after the delivery of the first group from Also-Schenectady in 1940. Unfortunately, this was near the end of the steam era. These beautiful and powerful articulated locos barely served the DH before heading to the scrapper's torch. The entire J-95 class of 40 locos was scrapped in ten months between October of 1952 to August of 1953, barely after 7 to 13 years of service for the class members. None survived. This photo appears to be a railman trip possibly signaling the loco's eminent demise. Tom Beckett (see comment below) has added a lot of interesting details about this locaiton. Loco specs - serial #69299, class J-95, four 20.5x32" cylinders, 69" drivers, and an impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi. It could generate a tractive effort of 94,000 lb. George Hamcke photo |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Great photo by an unknown photographer of the massive 1940 Also-Schenectady built 4-6-6-4 Challenger being serviced. There is some question as to whether this is 1502 or one of the other Challengers on the roster since the road number was cut off, but the view would be nearly identical for any of the 40 built for the Delaware & Hudson. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1505 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Long, massive, powerful and sleek all in one would be the description of this Delaware & Hudson 4-6-6-4 Challenger built by Alco-Schenectady in June of 1940. Specs - serial #69302, class J-95, 69" drivers, impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, four 20.5x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 597,000 lg, and impressive tractive effort of 94,000 lb. All of the D&H Challengers were scrapped between 1952-52 with only #1508 tender having survived. Although listed as Mechnicsville,NJ, as tom Beckett points out (see comment below), this is actually Mechanicville, NY. thanks Tom for helping with this. Max Miller photo |

D&H #1510 J65 4-6-6-4. From my D&H personal collection.. |
Description: |
History recounts an unfortunate event involving this particular Challenger as a result of an explosion... as detailed on Page 380 & 381 of Jim Shaughnessy's "Delaware & Hudson" "... ... ... of 4-6-6-4 No. 1510 as it was starting to climb Richmondville Hill in July 1941. ... ... ..." The explosion was blamed on low water in the boiler and deaths of three men.. Surprisingly, #1510 was rebuilt and placed back in service by the end of 1941. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1513 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Truly one of the great locomotives built by Alco in June of 1940. The loco was a massive powerhouse but only got to serve for a mere 13 years before being sold for scrap in February of 1953. Specifics - four 20.5x32" cylinders, 69" drivers, an impressive boiler pressure of 285 ps, and a tractive effort of 94,000 lb. According to Steamlocomotive.com - "Considered by many observers to be the handsomest of the Challenger type. More important, it was this class that introduced flat bearing surfaces on the front boiler supports. Alfred Bruce acknowledged in 1952 (p. 327): "The flat bearing-plate surfaces required careful alignment on the erecting floor, but they were well worth the effort." Why? This modification in how the front engine was allowed to move under the boiler was combined with a new limitation on how much was allowed in the articulation pin's vertical clearance. Now the front engine moved only as much what its springs would allow, said Bruce, "..as in the case of the rigid-chassis engine." The payoff in productivity was especially noticeable where the trackbed and alignment would allow it: "The result is the most stable-riding articulated engine ever built and one that is safely operated at speeds up to 60 or 70 miles per hour." At those speeds, Bruce declared, "[t]here are no smoother riding articulated steam locomotives today." All were disposed off in 10 months from October 1952 to August 1953." No photographer listed. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1517 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Another fine example of the 1940 Alco built Challenger-type locomotive. The massive loco was a powerhouse with 95,800 lb of tractive effort. Unfortunately the loco only got to serve for 12 years before being sold for scrap in October of 1952. Specifics - four 20.5x32" cylinders, 69" drivers, an impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, and a tractive effort of 94,000 lb. View DH #1513 in this album for a detailed comment concerning the smooth ride this monster provided. No photographer listed. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1524 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
This massive and beautiful beast of a locomotive was built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1942. An interesting and sad note was on the back of the photo. it states"Delware & Hudson #1524 at Carbondale, PA taken 10-24-1953 on RRE trip to Ninevah, NY. This loco went on scrap line next day." According to Alco-Schenectady records, the loco was actually sold for scrap in August of 1953 so the trip would have been its last hurrah after serving the DH for only 11 years.. Specs - class J, 69" drivers, impressive 285 psi boiler pressure, four 20.5x32" cylinders, engine wt of 600,000 lb & tractive effort of 95,800 lb. The photo was taken by Frank M. Seiffert Jr. |

DH 4-6-6-4 #1534 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
With the beautiful arched stone bridge and the sleek 4-6-6-4 Challenger, the photo by C.W. "Bill" Jernstrom looks almost European in styling. Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1943, this massive and powerful brute worked for the Delaware & Hudson until retirement and scrapping sometime in 1952-53 after barely 10 years of service. Specs - serial #70020, class J-95, 69" drivers, impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, four 20.5x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 597,000 lg, and impressive tractive effort of 94,000 lb. All of the D&H Challengers were scrapped between 1952-52 with sadly only #1508 tender having survived. Although C.W. Jernstrom identified the location as Union Dale, PA, Mike Woodruff (see comment below) more accuratedly idenitified it as the Starrucca Viaduct by Lanewboro, PA. Thanks, Mike! |
