Description:  Just two-and-a-half years old, Southern Pacific U33C has been stripped to its bare bones and sits on a whisker track at Southern Pacific's Taylor Yard, in Los Angeles. Built by General Electric in January 1973, this locomotive appeared to be beyond repair on July 16, 1975. But never underestimate the SP's shop forces, as before long this locomotive was back in service and earning its keep. This six-axle U-Boat would be retired on December 17, 1986.

Southern Railway Train No. 194
Title:  Southern Railway Train No. 194
Description:  Southern Railway train No. 194 was heading north through Slidell, Louisiana behind Southern Pacific U33C 8782, SD45T-2 9190 and a third SP unit. This run-through train between Houston and Birmingham was just south of the Slidell station, and the track in the foreground was the south leg of the wye that had served a creosote plant along nearby Bayou Bonfouca. A creosote plant was first built here in 1892 to treat wood for the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad’s trestle across Lake Pontchartrain. The plant closed in 1970 and the area was subsequently designated as an EPA Superfund site. After the creosote-contaminated soil was incinerated and the wye was removed, a 54-acre area west of the railroad station which once included the wye and the creosote plant was redeveloped by the city as HERITAGE PARK. Description:  You wouldn't know it from looking at this set of power; but we were along the Louisville & Nashville at the Read Boulevard grade crossing, a few miles east of the railroad's Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. SP U33C 8792 was heading east and running light with Southern SD45 3130 and SD35 3040, on their way to get a train which had been parked on the long siding east of the yard because SP couldn't accept it. This was a very common occurrence back then!
