SP SD40T-2 8314, Clyde, Illinois, April 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1978 (c/n 776069-8) it was equipped with a 123 inch short hood to contain radio equipment for mid-train helper assignments. Three whip antennas are visible. It is chalked: J.P. "SLUG" HAWLEY beneath the road number, suggesting that perhaps Mr. Hawley operated this locomotive at some point. It was assigned UP road number 8831 but was retired November 21, 2000 before receiving that number. |
