CRI&P E8 655 at Englewood Union Station, Chicago, Illinois, July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the westbound Quad Cities Rocket passing by the Englewood Union Station at 63rd Street in Chicago. By this date no trains stopped at the station, which once saw both the NYC's 20th Century Limited and the PRR's Broadway Limited (among others), in addition to Rock Island's Rockets and the Nickel Plate passenger trains into Chicago. The PRR crossed the Rock Island here (on this date, Conrail tracks), and the NYC left the Rock Island and passed behind the depot. It was possible at one point to see both trains of the NYC and PRR at this depot, and sometimes they would race each other for several miles eastbound after departing this station, which was torn down in 1982. |
