KCS No. 53  Contributor's Pick!
KCS train No. 53 is on the CSX with an NS crew as it crosses the NS at N.E. Tower. NS engineer Dave Honold is photographing the photographer, while CSX operator Earl Hampton gives the train a roll-by inspection. No. 53 originated in Dallas and will terminate at the CSX Gentilly Yard, just two miles away. Today's train has GP40 757 (ex-Conrail), GP40 778 (ex-ICG), and GP40-2 799 (built new for the KCS). N.E. Tower was closed in September 1990, and control of the crossing was transferred to the NS in Birmingham

Robert Federle General Nice shot. I see somebody shooting back. 12/12/2009 9:32:07 PM
Dale Weir General Fantastic photo! Also note: Per comments this 1987 shot shows loaded telecom cross arms behind the tower. Count the insulators, but note the cut wires hanging down. Private microwave and telecom leases have replaced the old ways. But maybe imagine yourself as 1967 lineman restoring service somewhere and the circumstances at hand. 12/13/2009 9:17:07 AM
David Stewart General Very Nice, Great shot!! 12/13/2009 6:10:31 PM
Earl Hampton General I remember that day at NE Tower. Mike taking a photo of Dave and vice-versa. If this is 1987 the line to the left (MP Press St. route) is out of service. I miss those days of being an operator at NE. I got paid to model 12 inch to the foot scale! 12/13/2009 6:43:48 PM
Earl Hampton General BTW I prefer L&N operator!!! 12/13/2009 6:44:38 PM
Ricky Knight General Great shot, just seeing those old white GP40's brings back memories for me as well, doesn't seem that long ago. 12/13/2009 9:56:05 PM
