This was taken the day after 9/11, and the poor passengers on the westbound Empire Builder have had a REALLY long day. The train was already running 12 hours late after having been stopped in Montana to ensure it was not under any terrorist threat. Then, just minutes out of Spokane on the Portland leg of the trip, the GE locomotive on the head end blew a fuse! It rolled to a stop at the west end of Overlook siding to wait while the crew radioed back to the shop at Parkwater to see if a spare was available. No luck, however, and after 2 more hours of delan, BNSF finally rolled out one of its trusty SD-40-2's to pull the train on to Portland. |
