UP's Skyline Mine,Utah-Valmy, Nevada coal train rolls west at Orem's Lakota Junction. Utah Transit Authority's ''Front Runner'' trackage can be seen in the foreground the date has been pushed back to 2014 for the opening of UTA's Salt Lake City/Provo Corridor. Historically speaking, Lakota Junction was a crossing with the Denver & Rio Grande Western Mainline and Union Pacific's Provo Subdivision between Provo and Salt Lake City. The crossing was ripped out in 1985 when Union Pacific gained trackage rights on the D&RGW Mainline. The original portion of the UP Line from Provo to Lakota Junction was torn out in 2008 to make way for the ''Front Runner'' Project. UP trains to and from Provo now use the old Rio Grande Mainline. |
