L P General Interesting fact about the coach yards. So I assume this was near Dearborn Station?? Was a big deal to get equipment to Union? 5/22/2014 10:52:10 AM
Chuck Zeiler General The rails in the lower left led to Dearborn Street Station. By the time of this photo the rails and station (except the head-house) had been removed, leaving enough rails for a switching lead. Trains to Union Station would pull north up the switching lead, back south down the ICG tracks to the former PRR tracks at Alton Junction, then reverse to Union Station, maybe a mile or so north. Trains arriving at Union would reverse this procedure, generally all these moves handled by SW1's, although early on Alco RS3's did the duty. 5/22/2014 11:35:47 AM
