Winter Night. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during February of 1966. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #8657 and another unit whose number is not recorded. #8657 is an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. Heading West, they are about to pass under the 17th Street Bridge. To the left are two other trains awaiting orders to proceed up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The light tower on the left is located just beyond the Passenger Station and the 12th Street Bridge. (The purple blurs are the result of strobe light reflected from nearby snow flurries.) |
