The highest station on the NYCTA is this one, Smith St and 9th Av on the IND line to Church Av and Coney Island, at 87 6" above the street. During non rush hours, it was the end of the line for the GG-it continued on to Church Av in rush hour, making the local stops while the F ran express. We see a GG leaving for its trip to Forest Hills in Queens with a set of R 40s, the famous slant nose cars. Up til recently, this line got some of the oldest cars in the system, often R1/9s, some of them R 3A and R 4 cars dating to the late 1930s. As the R 46s came on line starting in 1975, the older cars were retired, and the GG finally got some newer equipment such as these, which were hand me downs from the E and F trains, where they were captive for most of the previous decade.
