PRR 5833, BP-60, 1950
Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Martin Zak that was taken in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in June of 1950. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5833 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5833 was built in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. Dominating the background are exterior portions of the Passenger Station's trainshed.

Marc Boudreau General PRR Centipedes we’re delivered from Baldwin semi-permanently coupled with a drawbar as opposed to traditional couplers. As such, both A units were given the same road number (5824-5834) The lead unit was trainphone equipped. To distinguish them from each other, an A1 and A2 suffix was added to the road number a painted in small number near the rear of the locomotive. So, 5833, above, is actually 5833A2 and she is coupled here with trainphone equipped 5833A1. All of the A2 numbered units were subsequently renumbered 5812-5822. So 5833A2, above, later wore road number 5821. 10/12/2021 1:25:20 AM
