Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during September of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8663, #8675, #8655, and #8676. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1957-1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." |
