Illinois Central Gulf bicentennial GP38 1776 THE AMERICAN EAGLE and caboose 199411 were on display in Kenner, Louisiana. This was actually the ICG’s second 1776, as the first one (9510) was badly burned and damaged on 10 March 1975 in a collision with a truck that was transporting crude oil. Second 1776 had been built in February 1970 as IC 9503, but it was renumbered ICG 1776 between June 1975 and September 1976. After its lease expired in 1985 it became Missouri-Kansas-Texas 328 and then Union Pacific 1985. It was subsequently assigned UP number 286, however it was retired in May 2000 before being renumbered. |
