A westbound DODX baretable train on the Lordsburg sub. This location, near MP 1048 between Tully and Sibyl, was where nearly 2,600 U.S. Navy 500 lb. bombs being carried in a 107 car westbound train detonated in three massive explosions in May, 1973, leaving a 115 foot wide by 25 foot deep crater. Over 450 feet of track and roadbed were destroyed. Amazingly, there were no casualties, and the railroad had trains running again in 48 hours. |
