Description:
Great action shot of Pennsylvania RR 2-10-0 decapod #4309 heading up a long train wrapping around the curve at the historic Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA. Built by Baldwin in November of 1922, the loco was in sdervice until retirement and scrapping in June of 1955. Specs - serial #55780, class I-15A, 62" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 30.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 366,500 lb, impressive tractive effort of 102,027 lb. The date and photographer's name were not given for the photo.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8626, #8620, and #4311. #8626 and #8620 are AS-18M road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8626 was constructed in February of 1957, while #8620 was built in August of 1956. These diesels were summoned to assist this northbound coal train after the steam-powered pusher locomotive became disabled. #4311 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in November of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959 after 37 years of faithful service. Here is the sixth of ten original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is a portion of the storage yard at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop. In the background is Maintenance-of-Way flatcar #495955. Stored on its deck is a new cast-steel trailing truck which, at this point in history, may never be installed. In the foreground are numerous high-grade steel steam locomotive driving wheels which have run their last miles and are soon headed to the Recycling Center.

Originally purchased for passenger service, these unique locomotives were downgraded from 6000hp to 5000hp per semi-permanently coupled pair and placed into freight and helper service.
