Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5817 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service. #5817 was constructed in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Also visible is PRR N-8 cabin car #478113. Roy Healey Collection; #2 of 9. |
