Description:  Here is a composit article-with-photo that was published originally in the January 1948 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 64 & 66. Photo Caption: "This is the Friendship Train as it appeared east of Pittsburgh on the Pennsylvania Railroad. The locomotive is a Baldwin diesel. Inset shows how some of the train's freight cars were decorated." Prominent here is PRR engine #5827 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service. #5827 was constructed in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. (Don't ask me how a magazine published in January has a photo of an engine not yet built!)

Description:  Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) of a photo by Mr. C. Weaver that was taken near Lewistown, Pennsylvania, c. 1949. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5827 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of service. They're rockin' 'n' rollin' past LEWIS Tower with an eastbound passenger train.

Description:  Volkmer. Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania 5827." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Pennsylvania 5827. Baldwin-built Centipedes at East Altoona, Pennsylvania, October 29, 1959. Originally purchased for passenger service, these unique locomotives were downgraded from 6000hp to 5000hp per semi-permanently coupled pair and placed into freight and helper service. Photo by William D. Volkmer." PRR engine #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after 14 just years of revenue service. Also visible are deadlined "Decapod" #4335 on the left and the East Altoona Coaling Tipple in the distance.

Description:  Here is page two of a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, page 24. All of these locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service. Top Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. On the right, #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962. On the left, #5817 was built in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962. Middle Photo: At the left is PRR engine #5825, a BP-60 built in May of 1947, rated at 3,000 horsepower, and retired in April of 1952. Bottom Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. At the right, #5819 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. At the left, #5829 was built in December of 1948 and retired in April of 1962.
