PRR 8503, ES-15M, 1955 |
Description: |
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by John Pickett that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. According to Peter Hultgren, this photo appears on page 74 of Don Ball's (1978) book "America's Colorful Railroads." Photo Caption: "The two GP-7's are assisting two E-8 passenger locomotives pulling train #14, a fast mail and express train to Pittsburgh." In the foreground (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503 and #8502. Both are ES-15M's built by GM-EMD in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. Also note the presence of PRR engine #6154, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during December of 1943 and retired in April of 1959 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, it's running backward on Track #2 on its way back down to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." ("LouisFols"; #27 of 31) |

PRR Horseshoe Curve, #2 of 2, 1955 |
Description: |
iCurve. Here is the second of two successive images by John Pickett that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503, #8502, and two "EP" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #8503 and #8502 are ES-15M's built in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; they're helping to pull a mail and express train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Note PRR J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" #6154 running backward on Track #2! |

PRR 8503, ES-15M, 1964 |
Description: |
24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1964. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8503 and #8576. Both are ES-15M's built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; #8503 was built in 1952, but #8576 was built in 1953. With an unidentified caboose in tow, they are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible on the left is SLOPE Tower. |

PRR #8503 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Here's a 1952 EMD GP7 s1500 hp witcher, a class ES15m in the PRR books. Later it would be renumbered PC #5853 after the merger. Date is approximate but with Warren Evans help, the date must be after 1966 when PRR used large numbers on the cabs. With the help of Daniel Andres, Jr, who identified the location, this was taken at upper Bel-Del yard in Phillipsburg, NJ. Forrest Trittenbach photo |
