Description:  Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 March 1959. Shown here passing under the 24th Street Bridge (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8673, #8666, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8666 was constructed in February, while #8669 and #8673 were built in March. They're on their way back to East Altoona after completing another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. The large structure in the right distance is the Jaffa Temple. Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1959. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 03 September 1959. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5881 and #8669. #5881 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. #8669 is an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. Together, they are pulling a westbound passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Description:  Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 09 August 1961. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8669 and #8672. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Originating in East Altoona, they have travelled to the Wye Switches in Duncansville and are now backing into the Hollidaysburg Yards ~ where they will pick-up a train of new hopper cars (produced by the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop), and pull them up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Also visible are the PRR's Freight Station on the left and Hollidaysburg's historic "Chimney Rocks" on the right. This photo taken near the intersection of Blair and South Juniata Streets. This photo taken from the fireman's side of PRR engine #9790, an EMD EF-15A on static display as part of Hollidaysburg's 125th Anniversary Celebration. A portion of Broad Street is also visible on the left, along with the automobile belonging to the PRR Policeman who was guarding the one-engine-and-four-car display train. Description:  Altoona Action. Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chio-ne that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8669, #8668, and #8679. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8669 was constructed in March of 1958, #8668 in February of 1958, and #8679 in April of 1958. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." Note the "Through Service" cabin car with the yellow cupola.

Description:  PGH-ALT-63. Here is an original photo that I took after riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Pittsburgh to Altoona on 08 September 1963. Shown here (F to R) are PRR engines #8669 and #8671. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a 94-car mixed-cargo freight train past the Altoona Passenger Station on their way to Enola and points East. Visible at the right are the last three cars of my passenger train as they depart for Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City. Also visible is the 17th Street Bridge in the distance. This colorless photo taken from the 12th Street Bridge.

They are pushing a 98-car iron-ore train (headed by engine #2225) up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and head back down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. At the very end is N-8 caboose #478124. The homes in the background line one side of Altoona's 10th Avenue.
