In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." All are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8670 was constructed in March of 1958, while #8664 was built in February of the same year. 24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1964. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8673, #8664, #8676, #8661, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing a 98-car iron-ore train (headed by engine #2225) up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and head back down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. At the very end is N-8 caboose #478124. The homes in the background line one side of Altoona's 10th Avenue. |
